The International Day of Peace was created in 1981 by a unanimous resolution of the United Nations. Here in Rockbridge and Lexington, we wish to add our collective intention for local and global peace to the world celebration this day. On Thursday, September 21st, there will be a community event to commemorate. At various places around town, there will be opportunities to pray, meditate, do yoga, walk with nature, listen to music, and be in fellowship to hold space for peace. At 3:30 in Richardson Park, there will be a Kids Peace Playdate, where there will be crafts, music, games, and a Peace Path to learn steps for conflict resolution. If you are not looking to cook, come out for vegetarian soup and bread by donation at 6pm. All proceeds go towards expenses for the peace day event. Any extra donations will go for Hurricane Irma relief through UMCOR. Bring chairs or a blanket for a picnic and listen to a peace playlist of music while breaking bread with friends and neighbors. At 7:00 pm in Richardson Park is the main Peace Gathering event At 8:00 pm, stay for twilight mindfulness live music by Jonathan Aiden and his nature inspired keyboard compositions.
